Lipedema vs normal fat: Why understanding the difference is crucial to achieving body goals

Fat loss continues to be on everyone’s mind, but it’s essential to know your body well enough and the kind of fat it stores to make informed choices. That made us go on a quick search spree, during which we got introduced to lipedema fat and learned how it differs from regular fat in the body.

Dr Rajiv Manek, consultant general laparoscopic, metabolic and bariatric surgery, Wockhardt Hospitals Mira Road, said lipedema fat is not as similar to normal fat in its structure and behaviour.

“It is often characterised by painful, uneven, and disproportionate fat deposits in one’s legs and arms. Unlike regular fat, lipedema fat is known to be unaffected by diet and exercise and is often seen due to chronic inflammatory conditions,” said Dr Manek.

According to Dr Manek, one with lipedema fat will find it challenging to lose weight and will be in constant stress due to piling up those excess kilos.

“Normal or subcutaneous fat is stored just beneath the skin. It is evenly distributed across the abdomen, thighs, buttocks, and arms. Maintaining healthy, normal fat is necessary for overall health, as it is crucial in energy storage and even the metabolic processes,” said Dr Manek.

However, dealing with lipedema fat requires expert attention. “One must opt for an anti-inflammatory diet, stay hydrated, and exercise daily. It’s also essential to manage stress and improve circulation in the body. It is better to consult an expert to initiate appropriate measures without any delay to enhance overall well-being,” said Dr Manek.
