Viral video shows ambulance gliding through Kerala traffic, the Internet hails drivers’ discipline

Despite laws mandating that drivers yield to emergency vehicles, it’s still far too common across India to see ambulances struggling to move through congested roads. However, a recent dashcam video from Kerala has turned that narrative on its head, showcasing what collective traffic discipline truly looks like.

The now-viral sped-up footage, possibly recorded from an ambulance’s dashcam, shows the vehicle gliding through traffic with remarkable ease. Cars, bikes, and even heavy vehicles are seen promptly clearing the way, whether around sharp curves or even from the opposite lane. At no point does the ambulance have to stop, thanks to the steady blare of its siren and the responsive behaviour of the drivers on the road.

Sharing the clip on social media platform X, user Mini Nair (@minicnair) praised the scene, saying, “One of the many things I love about Kerala is how effortlessly 99% Malayalis give way to ambulances and fire trucks. Discipline and Humanity on display.”

“That’s something amazing I have seen in Kerala,” said another.

A third person contrasted it with their experience in Tamil Nadu, “Just the other day I was driving thru Coimbatore and was at a traffic signal. An ambulance approached, all the vehicles in front of it moved thru the red light. None in my lane moved and once the ambulance was clear, vehicles behind it stopped at the signal. Signal changed in a few seconds and then all moved. In Bangalore, the entire lit moves and continues to move.”

Another user reflected on Kerala’s overall traffic culture, “Yes. Had been on a trip to Kerala recently. Most of the drivers are calm and composed. Nobody honks every second, even when we were stuck in a jam for 10 mins, I could rarely hear 2 honks. Was surprised people were so patient in Kerala.”
